The Dawn of Eurasia: On the Trail of the New World Order

Review

“Maçães deftly navigates beyond the traditional dichotomy of the prevalent global balance of powers and, with the skill of a seasoned pundit, offers the exciting possibilities of a world readjusting to a new geopolitical architecture. An absorbing read.”—Shashi Tharoor, author of Inglorious Empire   “Part history, part travel-guide, and part political treatise, Maçães makes sense of our fracturing world in ways very few others could. That he does so with such style is nothing short of impressive.”—Ian Bremmer, president and founder of the Eurasia Group “Brilliant, bold, and beautifully told, The Dawn of Eurasia reveals world geopolitics like an unputdownable thriller. Seen from Brussels, Beijing, and everywhere from Istanbul to Almaty and in between, this is the extraordinary journey teeming with Russian spies, Chinese thinkers, Turkish radicals, and Iranian artists. This is a profound piece of political thinking as comfortable with Russian and Chinese ideas as it is with exposing the limits of our own.”—Ben Judah, author of This Is London: Life and Death in the World City   “Maçães skilfully guides his readers beyond the dangerous and increasing parochialism that dominates each country’s news, demonstrating a serious grasp of grander strategies and deeper shifts. . . . He is a knowledgeable, widely read and widely travelled guide.”—Douglas Murray, The Times “Maçães mixes his academic analysis with skilful reportage drawn from his travels. This makes the book both more entertaining and more convincing. As well as being a shrewd geopolitical analyst, Maçães is a gifted travel writer, with a sharp eye and a dry wit. . . . The concept of Eurasia is re-emerging from the history books to become a central concern of contemporary politics. Maçães is one of the first authors to explore the significance of this development and he is a consistently interesting guide.”—Gideon Rachman, Financial Times   “Filled with observations and insights gathered while travelling across Eurasia, Bruno Maçães’s account sets out why we are at the start of a new era in global affairs. An informative and perceptive guide, Maçães introduces regions, peoples, and countries that few pay attention to. In the changing world of the 21st century, understanding Eurasia is more important than ever. This book helps prepare for the world of tomorrow, today.”—Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads: A New History of the World   “Subtle, brilliant essayistic points about the future of world politics leap off the pages of this utterly original travelogue. There are few better people to listen to than Bruno Maçães regarding our current historical juncture.”—Robert D. Kaplan, author of The Revenge of Geography and The Return of Marco Polo’s World  “Bruno Maçães announces a new order for the 21st century—but it won’t be ruled from the United States if we can’t think beyond the oceans that have always defined Anglo-American politics.”—Peter Thiel, entrepreneur, investor, and bestselling author of Zero to One

This could be the best book I ever read.I bought the kindle edition of this book on a recommendation by Prof Tyler Cowen in his blog. It was kind of a lark on my part, as I do not generally buy books about current events, and also what I do not know about Asian history would fill nearly all the history books written about the continent. Nevertheless, I found (with the help of a good map) the narrative spun by Mr. Maçães very readable and enjoyable, and added so much to my knowledge of the EU and the Asian supercontinent. The section on Turkey was my favorite, and it was very appropriate that Mr. Maçães finished his journey and tale in that country because of its critical importance in the next 20 to 50 years.Mr. Maçães story will be most important to anyone now becoming an adult or starting their careers, because they will be living this story. As with all Kindle books, the maps and charts are poor and it pays to refer to a good paper map, or Google Earth, when reading this book. One weakness was that India and Indonesia, two likely anchors in the new supercontinent, were only briefly mentioned, although this might only be due to length considerations. I also found his epilogue to be a bit scattered, likely written in a hurry just before publication. But these weaknesses were not enough to withhold a 5 star rating, and should not detract anyone from buying this book. It is a gem.

The principal argument, that of the political emergence of the Eurasian landmass as a result of the economic rise of China is an interesting one, but buyers should be aware that its treatment in this book is that of a travelogue. Questions such as Russian and Turkish identity (European or Asian) or post-Soviet conflicts (Transdnistria, Karabakh, Chechnya, Ukraine), on which a significant amount of specialized literature already exists, appear as background to the author's impressions during his travels. The footnotes could have been expanded to guide readers towards more such sources. The book would also have gained from increased economic content (GDP tables and trade figures). While the author expresses a few doubts as to the prospects of Russian ambitions (for the Eurasian Economic Union for example), the book implicitly endorses the premises of Russian anti-Western political rhetoric, nor are any normative views on democratic v. authoritarian government expressed. The final paragraphs, mooting the idea that London may become a Eurasian capital on the Thames, seem at odds with the UK's recent efforts to control the inflow of Russian &Chinese investment. On the plus side: a) the book is pleasantly written, b) the concept of Eurasia is an important one that is (still) insufficiently examined by Western authors, and c) there are a few original ideas (e.g. that the Europe-Asia boundary is historical rather than geographical and that the US may mutate into a non-Western power).

This book was a bit unusual in style and not perfect from a literary standpoint, but it totally changed my perspective on the role of Europe and the U.S. in the 21st century. Extremely important.
