Finally, shore leave was over and I was eagerly back on board the Flying Dutchman with the Merry Band of Pirates, that's how this series pulls me in. So hard to put book 5 down, but I have to nap sometime. As in the previous books of the series, the Merry Band get into more trouble than, well, a barrel load of monkeys. Alanson's military humor is just great and certainly tickles this veteran's funny bone as the serious part of the tale moves along. Alas, I have reached the end of the book, in record time for me, so it's back to shore leave and a long wait 'til June when I can step aboard again. Keep up the good work Craig!

I've been reading this series for a while and while the story is good the repetition of dialogue begins to wear on the reader. Many elements are well written but poorly applied. Two chapters dedicated to a simple rescue of the main protagonist are expensively bloated with filler while the last 3 chapters of the book rush through some potentially interesting events. The never ending diatribes between "skippy and Joe" are amusing up to a point but halfway through the book just become annoying distracting and obvious attempts at filling a page (or three).Repeated use of similar OMG how are we going to survive...last minute impossible solution repeatedly over complicated plans becoming common place. Admittedly they are meant to emphasize the overall disadvantages of the main protagonist's and bare capabilities of survival.Skippy's repeated inability to use common sense solutions or even produce actionable solutions based on his "Awesomeness ".It seems like the writer is trying to epic up the story but realy needs to bring most of it down to reasonable and apply some easy so the epic parts realy are EPIC by comparison. All in all it is a good story with believable characters even if their actions arent. A good casual read.

The amazing 'Skippy' has returned, at last, to torture and be humiliated by the amazing 'Colonel Joe' ! GREAT new/next addition in this ongoing funny and entertaining saga! Any sci/fi or adventure story geek will love this series. Author Allison's tales are not only fun and unpredictable, but his science and astronomy knowledge keep the stories as real, and the plot lines diverse and believable, to never have the reader question the 'possibilities' he sets up. I'm looking forward with huge anticipation for the next 'Expedtion' in June, 2018!! (Defintely buy this series, but do read them in order. Of course you'll do this, as you'll be hooked after the first 'chapter' - Columbus Day.) Frank m.

Or did you really think a bunch of monkeys in a spaceship actually stood a chance without him?The flying-by-the-seat-of-your-pants style of writing the Alanson utilizes is back, and at full-force early on, in book 5 if the Expeditionary Force series. The crew, as always, is fighting for their lives and to keep their secret safe at all costs. There are lots of problems to surmount and think through, but also, I was pleased to see Bishop's growing homesickness and loneliness of command expressed at a realistic level. I've lost track at exactly how long the Merry Band of Pirates have been in space this go round, but with weeks/months sometimes needed between destinations, I would have thought we'd see him have a birthday or two by now. (But that's just me losing my train of thought.) Anyway, I enjoyed digging deeper into the mystery of Skippy's origins, the Elder civilization, and going where no man has gone before. But of course, the Merry Band of Priates' job is never done, so there's always book 6 to look forward to!

If you’ve never listened to an audio book before then start with this series. They really come to life in the hands of the amazing R.C. Bray (narrator of The Martian). The banter between the two main characters is so much more entertaining when you are hearing them (still funny when you read it). I just couldn’t wait this time for the audio version (even though R.C Bray does an amazing job and I will listen when it’s available) - that’s how good they are. This is basically a series I would be happy to contain twenty books - and I’d still be disappointed when it ended. This book centres even more closely on the relationship between the human Joe Bishop and the AI Skippy (the Magnificent). They are on more equal terms this time due to circumstances and for the first time it’s made clear that both benefit from their relationship (not just Joe and the rest of humanity)- the true awesomness happens when BOTH work together.Their relationship has helped this series be more than a “battle aliens to save earth” formulaic - it brings laughs, head shaking and even the occasional tear (although if you tell anyone I’ll deny it). There’s also a few space battles, near misses, alien encounters and “hold my beer” moments of course. I understand there are 12 books planned overall so don’t expect huge plot progression in each book - this is a 12 course fine dining experience - not fast food. Plenty happened to keep me entertained from the first page to the last.Listen to the audio if you can (and I recommend 1.25 speed) but if you can’t at lead READ this awesome series.

The book is about trying to fix Skippy. To that end we visit some more hostile planets that they need to escape from and we learn nothing about the elder race or who destroyed many of the elder facilities. There was no character development beyond Skippy, who seems to want start killing aliens because “they deserve it”. Hopefully something more interesting will happen in the next book that will advance the plot. This book was disappointing.

I am bummed that Amazon stopped offering audible narration for $1.99. I used to use whispersync to go back and forth between kindle and audible. Bummer. Anyhoo...this book is a great addition to the Ex Force series. Skippy is funny as ever and the story line is interesting. The book has good pacing so it never became tedious...just a good, solid read. Recommend you read the prior books in the series before reading this. Looking forward to release of the next book in June. Woot!
