Issues are discussed in serious ways in this book sometimes almost too insightful for their age but the plot opens up concerns and ideas abut freedom, family and slavery that are not the usual fare and can open up discussions in families and classrooms that are often avoiided. .
An excellent book. Again purchased for my (9 yr. old) granddaughter. Full of historical interest, it keeps the reader engaged. Parts are difficult (whipping, selling, or trading of slaves etc.) but are accurate. It is an excellent book, and will most likely spark a variety of questions and discussions. I would also recommend looking into Ms. Bradley's other excellent books.
Kimberly Brubaker Bradley has a gift for making history come alive. This book is a very accessible account of voices not found in typical history books. Fascinating perspectives on early U.S. history. Highly recommend for young and adult readers.
The end of this book hurt my soul. I never knew about these children and am appalled that history could just erase them. What is the trademark of America if not the erasure of people of color
This book focuses on how the boys felt about the limited contact they had with their father. Jefferson's sons with Sally Hemings looked remarkably like him, so much that two had to be sent to his son-in-laws estate when company stayed at Montecello!Well written.
The author makes her characters come to life. She explores their relationships and reveals how they survived a cruel system. The reader gets a view of a great and flawed man, Thomas Jefferson. His philosophy and lifestyle were in contradiction as he treated those he knew and trusted as chattel, his own progeny as well.
As much as I read of it I thought it was boring . My mother read the whole thing but she didn't like it either .
The historical details and accuracy combined with interesting characters makes this book a must read for readers who enjoy historical fiction. I read this book out loud to my children (ages 9, 11, 13 and 15). The book was so good that it prompted a family road trip to Monticello to see where the book took place. I highly recommend.
