Running Past 50 by Gail KislevitzCALLING ALL RUNNERS!Running Past 50 is a book that must be read by EVERY runner—those at or past 50 and those who are younger. Why? Kislevitz provides in depth inspirational stories of some 37 runners who have succeeded in making their passion for running a life time affair. Take Sid Howard—well known in Masters Running circles—while no longer doing long runs he continues to compete in the prestigious NYC 5th Avenue Mile and more importantly coaches younger & older runners to be their best...and all this at the age of 80! Then there is Drew Swiss—who stopped out from competitive distance running to raise a family - and after a number of years came back in his 50’s passionate about a new mission—to raise money for less than privileged kids via the NY Road Runners Team for Kids—to date he has raided over $700,000! There are three dozen more stories —each different-that inspire, and each is terrific reading....As a `senior’ runner myself and veteran of many marathons and half marathons the advice that Kislevitz provided from a variety of sports medicine doctors and physical therapists is invaluable. Kislevitz herself as an experienced coach and champion runner has her own suggestions for senior runners that are motivating, inspirational and practical!I enjoyed reading this book and it is a real page turner. In summary, READ THIS BOOK!Norm Solomon

Here you will find the unfiltered stories of several masters runners. Some are fast and some are slow, but all share the same desire to run for the rest of their lives. The author (also a older athlete)stays in the background and let’s the runners, who are in their 50’s to 90’s, simply tell their stories. Many of them share nuggets of wisdom about training, racing, and staying motivated. However, running for the LOVE of it—the feelings it brings—is what struck me with almost every story. The book closes with expert advice from a physical therapist, veteran running coach, and a podiatrist who each work with senior runners.Overall, this is an excellent book. As mentioned, the author doesn’t preach her points of view, as many running authors do, but lets the heroes do the talking.Highly recommended.

I loved ready about everyone's stories - the diversity but similarities were a great reminder of what you already intuitively know. I will recommend this book to many of my friends (especially the ones that say they are too old to run anymore).

I started running at 49 and found this book very interesting knowing and being one of the runners. Every chapter is very well written and it is hard to put down. These are real people doing amazing things and staying fit at all ages.

Didn't teach me as much as I'd hoped for, but definitely inspirational.

What an amazing read. I am a frequent reader of running, training and nutritional books and magazines for runners. Running Past Fifty is required reading for any runner, or active adult over the age of 50. It is inspiring and relatable and has brought a renewed joy to my own training as I read the inspirational stories of athletes not only my own age but older. Instead of worrying about the possibility of having to put my running shoes away for good, I am considering strategies for remaining on the roads for decades to come. I couldn't put it down and enjoyed every word describing the fascinasting lives of the athletes interviewed for the book. I hope there is a sequel. Very well written.

this is a book full of personal stories, not help. I'm not even going to read it. I didn't want a book of other peoples stories. I was looking for advice on running older

Really glad I purchased this book, a fun and informative read from start to finish. The profiles ranged from living legends to people who came to running later, to workhorses with amazing streaks and/or statistics. I appreciated that not all masters agree on every aspect of running later in life. Some swear by stretching, foam rollers, etc, others didn't incorporate those at all. Virtually all agree that cross training and longer rest from injuries or hard efforts are essential. Great stories, valuable advice, and the ending section with advice from more medical oriented professionals was helpful as well. Thanks to Gail for writing this, and people like Amby Burfoot and Tom Perri who helped gather the people to interview.
