Book Description

"This book is at once learned and readable, and takes account of the most recent discoveries and literature. It is the most comprehensive account of the canon since Bishop Westcott's The Bible in the Church (1864)." (Roger Beckwith, Latimer House, Oxford)

Dual warning!ON THE PLUS SIDE - If you have any interest in the origin of our Canon and have wondered how it came to be (other than believing it floated down from heaven written on parchment, already bound as a codex & ready for reading), you will find this an absolutely fascinating read! This may be the only book you'll find that is not trying to "sell you something." It is an objective (or as objective as anything can be) historical account, by an author generally considered to be the preeminent authority on critical literary analysis of the Bible, of how both the Jewish Bible (the basis for the Christian Old Testament), as well as the Christian New Testament came to be as they are today. While the author assumes the reader has some familiarity with Christianity/Christian Tradition, you need not have previously read through the Bible on your own, or even have more than a passing knowledge of the Bible to get through this book. If you are not a Bible scholar who can cite "chapter & verse" at will, it will help, as you read through this book, to have a copy of the Bible available, so you can explore further various points the author makes in the scriptures. You can read it starting only with the section covering the New Testament if you wanted, but I think it is much better if read straight through from beginning. This book will most likely not change any of your beliefs, but at least you'll have the facts to support your beliefs, or refute the spurious claims of others - who don't have the facts.ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE - This book is written in "The Queen's English" (not American English) and tends to be more "academic" in style (including footnotes) - it is no romance novel (apologies to Fabio), or light read. Do not dispare, you will quickly pick up the lexicon and learn to skip over those footnotes that are of no interest to you. If you do not have a Bible from which to refer (as your interest dictates), then I would STRONGLY SUGGEST you get one & keep it handy before you start reading this book. I am not a fast reader and I was able to finish the book within about 2 weeks of off & on reading while high-lighting passages of interest, and making margin notes for my later reference. Do not hesitate to put it aside and pick it back up again the next day if you start to bog down. You can get through it and will be better for it having done so!

A classic work on how the Canon of Scripture was discovered and affirmed. Bruce is a great scholar and writer and gathers all the sources and straws in the wind that give us a glimpse on how the earliest church fathers saw and interacted with the Scriptures. I found the discussion of St. Jerome and the Latin Vulgate to be extremely illuminating and I thought it remarkable how much of the New Testament was recognized as Scripture so early. If you are at all interested in this subject you can't do better than start with this wonderful book.

There are a couple things that are worth mentioning about this book. The most relevant for my purposes, is that this is a historical, rather than theological survey of the canon. When I picked the book up, I was hoping for something a bit closer to the latter. There is not a significant amount of commentary on the historical developments, but rather a description of who thought what when about the various "Christian" texts (the quotes are necessary because there is discussion of gnostic, and other heretical pseudo-Christian, texts). There is a three-chapter conclusion in which he comments on the standards of canonicity, the viability of holding that there is a "canon within the canon," etc., but the discussion is not as extensive as I would have hoped. The second thing worth noting is that this book is now quite old by academic standards, and I'm told by others more intelligent than myself that it is a little out of date. Even the study of history is ever-changing, and there are relevant contemporary discussions that Bruce does not mention, simply because they were not discussions during his lifetime. So if one is interested in having the most up-to-date information, I'm told that this likely is not the best option. However, for someone with a layman's interest in the historical development of the canon, I can (finally) recommend this. It was well-written, and the chapters are broken into manageable chunks, which I appreciated. There were a number of interesting anecdotes about how the church fathers utilized the various texts, and it did provide some insight on both canonical and noncanonical texts. So in the end, while it probably is no longer fit for a classroom, it is certainly a great option for the library of one with an interest in the historical dimensions of Christianity.
