Beautiful set! I struggled to see the item before purchase but wanted to post pics that are on Sibley's site. His work is just magnificent. See photos attached of cards up close.
I purchased this set for my 6 year old who has recently become an avid bird watcher. Instead of leaving them as individual cards, I punched holes in them and use binder clips so now she can flip through the cards without losing any of them. The pictures of the birds on the front of the cards are beautiful with details to look for to identify the birds. The back of the cards have the name of the birds, where they are frequently found, and random information about the bird. For anyone who is a bird watcher, these are a wonderful gift or, like our case, a great addition for nature studying during homeschooling.
I asked for these as a gift for my daughter for her birthday. She has used them often and enjoys reading them to her younger brothers. The pictures are beautiful and clear and the cards are extremely durable. The box they come in is great to protect the cards and keep them in one place:) and also very attractive. We have been able to do some great side by side comparisons of various birds that we are learning about which is the main reason I got them--flipping back and forth through a book is not as easy to compare. These are excellent bird cards and I highly highly recommend!
This is a great set of cards. It comes in a really nice, attractive box. When I ordered this product, I didn't realize that the box it came in was also going to house the cards permanently and safely... a nice touch! You pull the little ribbon tag to reveal two decks of cards, separated by a built in divider. One deck is comprised of 1/2 common Eastern birds, 1/2 common Western birds. The other deck is comprised of birds found commonly across the continent.The illustrations can't be beat! They're beautiful. The front of the cards feature the wonderful artwork, while the backs of the cards identify the name of the bird, where they can be found, a brief description, and some other very basic information. It's just the right amount of information-not too much that it's overwhelming, but just enough to learn what you need to know. This is ideal for beginners who are still learning, and experienced birders who wish to test their knowledge.Because the birds are identified by name on the back, as opposed to right nearby the illustration (as in a book), learning by site is much easier--as you learn to identify without relying on the name written right by. These will be used in a State Park as an educational tool primarily, but they're very fun to quiz yourself with, too!
Wonderful flashcards with beautiful illustrations and great identification information; included in a nice storage box. Only drawback is the limited number of species. Obviously, with the thousands of species living and/or migrating to or from North American, it is virtually impossible to have a set with every bird species. However, it would be nice to have more waterfowl included as we live along the Pacific Flyway and see many different ducks and geese. Maybe another set of cards featuring North American waterfowl?
We purchased this set of flashcards for our nature-loving girl's ninth birthday. There are two decks of standard-sized cards. She is charmed by the illustrations, the cute little box the cards come in, and has quickly learned more facts about birds (she was already a blossoming birder!) since reviewing these cards. She keeps them in a safe place in her bunk bed and often likes to go out with her cards by herself and identify birds/calls and explore. We like that they keep her engaged, learning, and she is teaching herself!
My daughters (age 6 and 8) have LOVED this set and I love it, too. It shows the male/female varieties of each bird on the card, and shares a phonetic explanation of their calls, etc. It's really neat!
This is a really beautiful, well designed set of flashcards. They come in a very sturdy box divided into two sections - one side has 50 cards common across all of North America and the other side has 50 cards split evenly between birds common to Eastern North America and birds common to Western North America. Illustrations on the front and common name and Latin name on the back along with specs, range and a brief description of the bird and write up on habitat. My daughter & I really enjoy flipping through these - wish there were similar sets covering other topics - animals and insects of North America for example.
