This was a terrific book. It is really a combination of three books; the first about a normal happy life, the second about a horrible train crash that injured the author horrendously, both physically and psychologically, and the third about the disgraceful lack of preparedness by the railway industry for accidents of this kind, both in the way of lacking technology and in the need for education of passengers in instructions in how to evacuate in the event of a crash.This book is a quick interesting read. The author could have gone into more detail about all three internal "books" that she wrote. It left me, the reader, thirsting for more information and knowledge.All around, this is a wonderful based on truth novel.
“Terror by Railâ€, Lynn Radice’s personal account of the Amtrak 188 disaster in 2015, is as much about personal transformation as it is about a train wreck. The book starts out describing Lynn’s almost fairytale life as she becomes romantically involved. At the same time, leveraging her considerable intellect and entrepreneurial drive, she accomplishes much on her own in the business world and philanthropically while successfully raising two daughters as a single mother. Frankly, the interplay between these two threads in her life are a bit disturbing as she pulls back from the latter to focus on the former. In the process, as she gets caught up, she rationalizes this by still visiting her daughters regularly, and often including them in her newfound lifestyle (enabling them to experience people and places they would never have otherwise had access to). However, after the accident, and its related impact on Lynn’s ability to play her borderline-courtesan role, the illusion of her lifestyle dissolves and she is left rediscovering, albeit through considerable pain and suffering, her core values and the things that matter most – family, friends, independence, simplicity, and public service (which now includes her focus on railroad safety to save others from an equal, or in the case of oil-laden “bomb trainsâ€, even worse fate). And so, beyond the harrowing and fascinating story of a tragic accident, this is a reminder of how easily our lives can get derailed if we are not vigilant. Lynn came to realize that, as magical as her life seemed prior to the accident, it was truly a train wreck waiting to happen. Through an actual train wreck, she ironically learned how to get her life back on track, though, sadly, only after carrying the freight of devastating physical and emotional injuries. It is because of this insight, so openly and transparently delivered by Lynn, that I recommend her book to anyone who wants to reflect on life and its ultimate meaning, which should include just about every one of us!
This was a wonderful, yet frightening depiction of this tragedy. What seemed to be an accident when it occurred, it is sad to know that it could have easily been avoided. Also, being a resident of Philadelphia, it is terrifying to think of what could have happened to the entire city if not for downright luck and possibly the grace of God. Lynn does an outstanding job putting the reader right in the middle of this disaster to understand the terror that these passengers were facing as they were fighting to survive. She also does an excellent job at explaining firsthand how an incident like this can have life altering affects long after that fateful night. Thank you Lynn for taking the time to share your experiences and for all of the work that you do toward train safety in the hopes that others won't have to live this tragedy in the future. I highly recommend!
Ms. Radice writes with such honesty about her experience. I believe her story will help her fellow surviving passengers and their families but also anyone who has experienced a life changing trauma. In an instant, one's life can change forever, but we often forget how trauma affects a person's loved ones, and friendships and even business relationships. Her openness will shed light on how we can be more empathetic, supportive, unrelenting and unwavering in helping our loved one to make it through to the other side of tragedy. Ms. Radice has a unique perspective of the world now, having experienced "both sides" and we are all blessed that she has chosen to put it into words in this exceptional book.
Being from the Philadelphia area, I remember when this train accident happened. It is unfathomable how an engineer would be going so fast around a bend putting so many people in harm's way. Unfortunately, 8 people had to die with over 200 more injured for what they call operator error. Author Lynn Radice does a good job telling her story about what happened that night. She brings you into the conditions after the crash and the desperate search for exits, the painful toll on the humanity and people working together for the common purpose to survive.The most enlightening thing about this book is to see how this accident could have been much much worse. This book exposes how close this train came to crashing into oil tanks which would have certainly taken many many more lives. Many questions remain surrounding this accident which are either not being asked, investigated or reported on.. It will be interesting to see if this book helps to bring any more light to the situation and helps to provide some resolution for it's victims. A solid effort from Lynn Radice writing her first book on a tragic event which has greatly impacted her life. What an eye opener!
