A longtime jazz fan, I've been consistently irritated by the fact that it takes actual effort to sit down and research to find what is good and new out there. I can do it, but it's a hassle; new jazz is practically impossible to find through normal channels. And for younger people, someone may know they _a_ jazz band but still be bewildered how find more music like that. Say, suppose you'd only heard the old stuff and someone gave you a Snarky Puppy CD (I know, young people don't listen to CDs, just go with it) and you think "this is jazz? How do I get more like this?" How would you ? Commerical radio doesn't play decent jazz, public stations don't play anything less than thirty years old, and the music discovery capabilities of apps like Pandora I've found really poor for jazz.Fortunately, this book makes the contemporary scene a lot less bewildering. Without explicitly intending to, the author manages to touch on most of the major players in contemporary jazz. And the list at the end of the book of the "129 Essential Albums of the 21st Century" is nearly worth the price of a book; many of these artists I haven't heard of, but I do own about a half-dozen of the albums on the list, and every one of them deserves to be there. I'm not sure Nate Chinen intended for it to be a primer for the who's who of contemporary jazz; they are, after all, mostly adapted magazine articles with plenty of interviews. Can I quibble? Yeah, I would've like more than a passing mention of greatist-living-arranger Maria Schneider *fan plug*. But this book works so well as an introduction to what is happening right now in jazz that it's well worth reading on that basis alone.

This was an insightful view into the modern jazz scene and musicians who are paving the way for the future, though in different directions. I'd highly recommend it for any jazz fan. It has certainly encouraged me to explore new artists.

I found the narrative somewhat interesting. The biggest problem is that the author is mostly talking about musicians who are already recognized. I wanted to read about people who are actually edgy and i had not already known about.

By looking at 20th Century jazz and it's musicians, Chinen builds on that and extrapolates into the 21st Century and how musicians are carving out their own styles of jazz in multiple areas--some not previously defined as "jazz".From straight ahead jazz, to avant garde, to jazz-rock/fusion, and on into the incorporation of soul, r&b and hip-hop, this book is the proof (if anyone needed it) that jazz isn't dead. To prove his point Chinen sites many jazz players from the last century and many from this new century that, so far, have proven that jazz may have changed but it is still a vibrant source of good, challenging music. The author lays out subjects like the seeming lack of direction as to where jazz was going, to the jazz genre largely being forgotten in the rise of rock in the '60s, and the general downturn in jazz sales, but sites many musicians who continue to plow their own furrows and were (and are) still recording vital music into this century. This book is somewhere between four and five "stars" for jazz fans.From Louis Armstrong, AACM, Wynton Marsalis, Gary Burton, Nels Cline, Mary Halvorson, Jack DeJohnette, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Kamasi Washington, John Zorn, Miguel Zenon, Lionel Loueke, and many others, all are cited throughout the book that helps prove that jazz is alive and doing well, by building on the past but maybe adding other types of music into the jazz mix.When I first received this book I wasn't to excited ("another book on jazz"), even though I had read and enjoyed Chinen's previous work in Jazz Times. But once I picked this book up and started to read I new I was reading a book worth adding to my bulging library of books on jazz. If you're a deep jazz fan and have ever wondered where jazz is going, this book will help you better understand the directions it's headed.This first edition has deckle edge paper (something you rarely see today), a cogent layout of information, notes to each chapter, and an index. There's a list of what the author says are essential albums from the 21st Century (so far). Plus, at the end of each chapter is a list of artists/albums as examples of the music found in that chapter--a nice touch. There are no photos, but none are really needed.
