The subtitle of this book is "The Greatest Aviation Photographs of World War II" and while it is full of great photos, it's probably up to the reader to determine if these are the greatest. The book is broken up into chapters, each one covering a different theatre of the war. Naturally, some theatres get more coverage than others, but at least all are included. A majority of the photos are of American planes, some of them in really excellent color, and the quality is extremely high. I'm sure several have been re-touched, but that's fine with me as it makes them sharper and show more detail. All pictures also come with a caption which usually identifies the time, place, aircrew and unit, and many also give details on the final action(s) of the plane and/or aircrew. Unfortunately, the captions are presented in a lighter grey color which might be harder to read in low light or for those who have vision problems.Having looked at thousands of aviation photos from World War II, I can honestly say this collection contains plenty I've never seen before, especially on the Axis side. It's a really good book and I definitely recommend it to those who are aviation enthusiasts, World War II buffs and/or military historians.
Wonderful photos, restored and printed very well on good paper. Yes, the captions are printed in grey, not black, but are easy to read in good light. You should view these pictures in good light anyway to fully appreciate them. The book designer got a little carried away with the choice of grey print, but this does not materially detract from a unique book.
Given as a gift to a WWII expert. He was very impressed with the content and photos and saw many things that he had only heard of or better photos than he had seen before. Yes, the typeface is thin and not as dark as would be best, but the content and the photos are well worth having.
The grey caption type didn’t bother me. I loved the quality of the restored photos, and the large format that really allows a close up view. For military modelers looking to accurately reproduce the wear and tear of aircraft surfaces in combat, there’s some excellent material here, including hard to find color images. The only real lack from my perspective is a relative dearth of Japanese aircraft.
If you’re looking for just one book about warplanes of WW2 then look no further. You need to get this ONE!!!!!! Photographs look AMAZING!!!!!!
Superb photography, punctuated with interesting commentary relating to the major theaters of the war. very well executed.
Great book. Photos are top quality (even those I’ve seen printed before), the paper is great (which enhances the photos) and the captions are well written. I rarely review books, but I had to do this one, it’s excellent.
Great book with great pictures of word war 2 aircraft
