I am a Graham Hancock fan, and although this book is long-winded in some places (he takes great pains to explain the ancient archaeological megaliths he researched), I found the book fascinating. It is almost impossible to explain briefly what the book is about, but I'll try. He travels to Indonesia, Peru, Turkey and other places to investigate -- often almost unknown -- megalithic monuments or "buildings". Some are being investigated or researched by scientists, while investigation of places like Göbekli Tepe in Turkey might right now (due to the political situation) have come to a halt. In short, he did exhaustive research to prove that a great civilisation existed more than (roughly) 12,000+ years ago, who left their "fingerprints" -- these monuments -- in parts of the Northern hemisphere. This civilisation and its complete destruction circa 12,000 years ago, has been forgotten, except where it lives on in myths and legends. The destruction came about as the result of enormous shards of a comet which hit the earth sometime between 12,800 - 11,600 years ago. This destruction caused a new Ice Age -- and the humans who slowly over thousands of years emerged and built a new civilisation knew little about what had gone before. Hancock researched his facts very carefully, and mentions many other scientists who came to the same conclusions as he did. Basically he concludes that the megalithic pyramids and monuments he visits are much older than mainstream archaeology would admit or even want to admit. But you have to read this densely-written and well-researched book yourself -- I was flabbergasted at some of the explanations and facts he unearthed. And basically -- coming back to the Mayan calendar and modern astronomical research he concludes that -- give or take anything from the present day to 800 years hence -- the earth will once again cross paths with deadly comets, of which three (asteroids who are waking up like dormant volcanoes) seem to be developing in the asteroid belt, and apparently can be seen through telescopes. We are entering the danger period ... Wow, what a ride this book was! It was a slow read, as I am no archaeologist, but I enjoyed it and could hardly put the book down. I am impressed by the thorough research the author had done.
A very thorough book. A nice round up on Fingerprints of the Gods. Atlantis or something like it did exist. This book comes very close to proving it. A giant Comet or Asteroid started a small Ice Age that lasted for 1200 years, 11.600 years ago, which wiped out a very advanced global civilization. The remnants are everywhere as megalithic temples, walls and sites. Myths, stories and knowledge have survived to this day. Graham Hancock is a competent guide through 11.600 years. Can be a bit heavy on the scientific side, but it gives the book a lot of credibility. Highly recommended!
This book brought me clarity: In today's world of cell phones, the Internet and thousands of cable channels, Magicians of the God's reminds me that we DON'T have all of the answers. As a matter of fact, it implies that, even with our modern conveniences, we might actually fall woefully short of the knowledge of our ancestors. Magicians provides a refreshing glimpse back to my childhood when there were things yet known or even discovered.
LOTS of information. Maybe a case of TMI. A bit tedious. I gave up on page 371, realizing I was forcing myself to keep reading. I loved Fingerprints of the Gods, and thought this would be more of the same fascinating hunt. Obviously Hancock did a LOT of travel and investigating, but it was more a catalog of this than an exciting adventure. Some no doubt will love this kind of detail. A little too much for me.
I must say I'm not for fringe theories normally but being pushed by a dear friend of mine, I went with him to see the Inca s ruins in peru and I accepted to read this book.I'm now really intrigued. And if our ancestry and history is longer and more complex than we were told... the more interesting we become.I've met Forster... now I would be happy to meet Hancock.Keep the good work. Even if only 10 percent of this is real... its amazing
